The Fraser River

The Fraser CanyonThe Fraser River is the largest fish producing water course in the province. The Fraser is also the worlds largest supporter of the spawning Sockeye salmon. Because of this, millions of Spring, Coho, Chum, Pink and Sockeye salmon pass through the canyon on their way to spawning grounds every year. Canada's second largest river is over 1,300 km long. It is one of the most commercially rafted rivers in the world. In the Canyon the river is wedged between the Cascade Mountain Range and the Coastal Pacific Mountain Range. The narrow rock canyon walls cut a windy and narrow passage for the mighty Fraser that rips through this vigorous landscape.

The Nahatlatch River Valley

The Nahatlacth River To get to the Nahatlatch River Lakes and River Valley, take the Trans-Canada Highway, head east until you reach Boston Bar, turn left and head through North Bend and then follow Chaumox Road. The drive is amazing! Along the west side of the Fraser, you will cross many stunning creeks, ponds and scenery. You will pass over a large bridge that is high over the marvelous jade green Nahatlatch River. As you cross the bridge you are entering the Nahatlatch Canyon. The next stretch winds along the northeastern side of the river. While you are driving, the Canyon starts opening into the River Valley that is separated by four amazing lakes. Each lake has their own unique color. The Nahatlatch has many great activities to offer such as our white water rafting which we are famous for. The Nahatlatch River has some of the best white water in Western Canada. Cabin rentals are available and many campgrounds are spread throughout the area.

Hell's Gate Airtram

Enjoy North America's steepest declining airtram, fully suspended as it passes through the most traitorous section of the Fraser River. Hells Gate, named after Simon Fraser's voyage in 1808, stating in his journal that "no man should ever pass through here. It was truly like passing through the Gates of Hell!" Hell's Gate is home to gigantic fish ways constructed to assist the millions of salmon that pass through the river every year. While visiting Hell's Gate, take a walk across the suspension bridge and view the river from many observation decks. There is an educational center with videos and information and the history, the railway and of course the Spawning Salmon. The Salmon House Restaurant is most known for their delicious salmon dinners. They also serve a wide range of menu items appealing to all crowds. Hell's Gate features many little shops including their famous world record holding fudge factory. The shop currently holds the record of 232 flavors of fudge that was set on July 1st, 2006. The attraction is dog friendly and provides fresh water for your four legged friends. Hell's Gate is open daily from mid-April through to mid-October. Provincial Parks- Alexandra Provincial Park

Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park is a small park centered around the site of the original Caribou Wagon Road bridge over the Fraser River. The original bridge was constructed in 1861 by Joseph W. Trutch and named after Princess Alexandra of Wales. To recover the $45,000 construction cost for the 90 meter bridge, a toll of $7.40 per ton was charged. Today a second bridge, built in 1926, sits on the site of the original which was dismantled in 1912. The park was established in 1984. It provides both rest stop and picnic facilities for travelers. Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park is two kilometers north of Spuzzum and 40 km north of Hope. There is a hiking trail that can lead visitors down to the site of the old Alexandra Bridge. Part of this trail is remnant of the old highway from the 1920s. This trail is less than ? km in length one way.
