The Hope Slide
Early in the morning on Saturday Jan 9th 1965 an enormous
landslide crashed
into the Nicolum Creek, whipping out more than 3km of the Hope-Princeton Highway
Said to have been caused by a small earthquake the hope slide a was sum of a
massive 46 million cubic meters of earth, rock and snow smashing down in a
matter of seconds from the over 2000 meter high mountain it came from. Filling
the bottom of the valley with 70 meters deep. Outram Lake at the foot of the
mountain was completely buried sending the water and soft clay from the lake bed
were shot violently up the mountain on the opposite side of the valley spreading
to a south-east direction sweeping away everything in its path. Seismographs
recorded to earthquakes the morning in the nicolum valley, one these earthquakes
was at 6:58 am the approximate time this massive slide occ
urred.
The new Highway and the site viewing the spectacle of nature are built above the
debris up to 70 meters above the original surface. You can view this great sight
by taking the hope Princeton highway from hope towards manning provincial park
there is no way you can miss it! This provincial park is has a picnic area and
washroom facilities for the public use.|City
