Lytton RIVER FESTIVAL

Lytton River Festival August 29th 31st

The Lytton River Festival is a celebration of two great rivers-the Thompson and Fraser-and their historic and present role in the small community of Lytton. The Interior Salish First Nations people have lived along these magnificent rivers for over 10,000 years and are an integral part of the River Festival. Their rivers are integrated into their culture. The Village of Lytton, Siska Indian Band, Nicomen Indian Band, Lytton First Nations, Lytton & District Chamber of Commerce, Royal Canadian Legion, and Kumsheen Rafting Resort are active partners in this river-oriented, fun-filled three-day river celebration. New in 2008! BC Downriver ChampionshipsTwo championship kayak races take place on Sunday. Before lunch, some of BC's best paddlers will compete in the BC Downriver Championships Classic Race, Frog Rapid to Lytton. After lunch the BC Downriver Championships Sprint Race, another skill and endurance challenge, takes place between the Frog Rapid and Witches Cauldron. The awards ceremony will take place in the evening. Click on the Detailed Event Schedule for more information. Pow-Wow An all-day Pow-Wow that celebrates our two great rivers and their importance to the First Nations People at Lytton for over 10,000 years takes place on Sunday.  Dances celebrate the salmon, the great waters, and the spirit of these two enormous rivers: the Thompson azure and sparkling, and the Fraser brown and silty. Chicken Poop Bingo This is mostly a Lytton invention. It's a hilarious bingo game involving you, a twoonie, a chicken, a few chicken droppings, a bingo board (large one), and anticipation and tension. You'll love it. Gold Panning Gold was first discovered by our local Nicomen First Nations people on the Thompson River, just north of Lytton in the 1850's. This discovery led to the Cariboo Gold Rush in 1858. Today you can still pan for gold along the rivers, but you only get rich if you know how to do it and have the right location. Try your hand at Gold Panning at the River Festival - gold is guaranteed. Join us on Labour Day This is your invitation to become part of an event that celebrates the important role that these two great rivers have played in Lytton's history and culture. Come for a day or stay for three; you'll be glad you did.
